Swarna Prashana

Ayurveda's classical immunity ritual for children, given on Pushya Nakshatra

Overview

Swarna Prashana is one of the sixteen samskaras described in classical Ayurvedic texts — most fully in the Kashyapa Samhita, the foundational text on child health. It involves giving a child a small, precisely prepared dose of purified gold (swarna bhasma) combined with ghee, honey and herbs.

It is traditionally given on Pushya Nakshatra, which occurs roughly once every 27 days and is considered the most auspicious of the nakshatras for it.

You will see the name spelled several ways — Swarna Prashana, Suvarna Prashana, Swarnaprashan, Swarna Bindu Prashana — along with the Kannada ಸ್ವರ್ಣ ಪ್ರಾಶನ. They all refer to the same practice.

Swarna Prashana dates 2027

Please confirm before travelling. These dates follow Pushya Nakshatra, whose timings shift slightly by location, and we do not run a session on every occurrence. Call +91 80 43780668 to confirm the date and timing before you come.

Who it is for

  • Traditionally given from birth to 16 years
  • Most commonly started in infancy and continued monthly
  • Given on an empty stomach, in the morning
  • A single dose takes moments; there is no procedure and no recovery time

Children with a known condition, or on regular medication, should be seen by our doctor first. Bring details of any medication your child takes.

What it is given for

Classical texts describe Swarna Prashana as supporting medha (intellect), agni (digestive capacity) and bala (strength). In contemporary terms, parents most often bring children for:

  • Support for immunity and resistance to recurrent infection
  • Support for memory, concentration and learning
  • Support for digestion and appetite
  • General growth and development

A note on what we claim. Swarna Prashana is a traditional practice with a long classical basis and growing but still limited modern clinical study. We describe it as what it is: a supportive Ayurvedic samskara. It is not a substitute for childhood vaccination, and it does not treat an existing illness. Any practitioner promising it will prevent disease outright is overstating the evidence.

How it is prepared

The preparation is what distinguishes a properly made Swarna Prashana from an over-the-counter product:

  • Swarna bhasma — gold subjected to classical purification (shodhana) and incineration (marana), so it is rendered into an assimilable form
  • Cow ghee and honey, in classical proportions
  • Medhya herbs — typically Brahmi, Shankhapushpi, Vacha and Guduchi, chosen for their described action on intellect and immunity

It is prepared and dispensed in our own pharmacy, under our doctors’ supervision, with dosage adjusted for the child’s age.

Price

Swarna Prashana is priced per dose and is deliberately kept accessible, since it is intended to be taken monthly over years. Because the dose varies with age, we confirm the exact figure when you arrive rather than quoting a single number here. Call +91 80 43780668 for the current rate.

What to expect on the day

  1. Come in the morning, with the child on an empty stomach where practical
  2. A brief check by our doctor, particularly on a first visit
  3. The dose is given by mouth — it takes seconds
  4. Wait a short while before feeding
  5. Book the next month’s date before you leave

Sessions can be busy on Pushya Nakshatra days. Calling ahead saves waiting.

The shloka

The classical reference from the Kashyapa Samhita, Lehanadhyaya:

Suvarnaprashanam hyetat medhagni bala vardhanam Ayushyam mangalam punyam vrushyam varnyam grahapaham

Rendered plainly: it is described as promoting intellect, digestive fire and strength; as conducive to long life, auspiciousness and complexion; and as protective.
